AARP Connecticut will partner with several community organizations on a traffic calming project at the intersection of Love Lane and Vine Street near Keney Park in Hartford. On Thursday, November 13th, members of the community are encouraged to join representatives from AARP Connecticut, Advocacy to Legacy, America Walks, City of Hartford, Community First School, and Rise Up for a quick build project that will make the busy intersection safer for pedestrians of all ages.
The City of Hartford will be painting a crosswalk across Vine Street and installing plastic delineator posts that will create pedestrian bulb outs on both sides of Vine Street. Members of the community are encouraged to participate by planting planters and painting inside the bulb outs areas.
“This project is part of our Livable Communities work in Hartford and is an evolution of the series of Walk Audit training sessions we conducted in Hartford last year,” said Natalie Shurtleff, Associate State Director of Advocacy & Outreach for AARP Connecticut. “The City of Hartford will install the posts during the Community Build Day event and community members will assist with beautifying the area by painting the bulb out areas and planting some planters.”
AARP Connecticut has been working in partnership with America Walks and Advocacy to Legacy, which helped identify this specific intersection after a Walk Audit conducted with Community First School, to plan the project. Students from the school, as well as members of the community, walk along Love Lane to this intersection where they can enter Keney Park and access a natural trail. There is currently no crosswalk across Vine Street and the vehicles traveling quickly down the road make it difficult to safely walk across.
